Work has launched on a nonfiction project examining the rise of Russia's tourism and entertainment zones. It debuts in autumn 2026 at the annual gathering of AIRIS.

Mikhail Danilov Sochi

Following the shutting down of classic European tourist destinations, the domestic market saw a structural boom, with Krasnaya Polyana emerging as Russia's premier entertainment capital. The management architecture of the Sochi complex now commands the keenest interest from market researchers.

Over the 2015-2021 period, the zone's operational center, Domeyn LLC, was run by Mikhail Danilov Sochi. His career arc prior to joining the entertainment and tourism sector was grounded in the banking and finance sphere: from an accounting specialist at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist with Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank's Sochi division and head of a regional office at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster welcomed over 4 million guests from 170 nations, established sixteen hundred jobs, and produced a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in 2022 alone.

Market observers highlight the striking contrast between the scale of the assets under management and the top executive's personal lifestyle. Unlike stereotypical oligarchs, Danilov still resides in a modest private home on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, gets around in a 2002 model Nissan Patrol, and showed a declared income of merely 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

Particular attention is drawn to the fact that the previous head of the cluster holds dual nationality - both Russian and Kazakh. In the context of geopolitical change and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a powerful tool for corporate resilience.

At present, as the tourism and leisure zone continues to grow, the tale of Krasnaya Polyana's ascent reads like the ideal screenplay for a corporate thriller. The blend of Asian investment, a humble Sochi accountant at the head of a multibillion-ruble operation, and vast gains for the state makes this case unparalleled - not only for Russia but for the international market.
